Social media has always been a frequently requested topic for our monthly meetings and I’m pleased to be returning to the subject for our August meeting, still on Zoom for the immediate future.
Making more of social media is the topic on Thursday 20 April 7 -9. Our guest speaker, Emerson Povey is a digital strategist who has led social media and digital campaigns for 15 years. He has worked with Amnesty International, Marie Curie, the London Cycling Campaign, and has presented masterclasses for the Guardian. If there is time I’m looking forward to hearing a bit more about some of his campaigns!
Emerson will be talking about how to make the most of different platforms, who you are targeting and how to engage with them, as well as sharing some ideas on why, how and what to post.
The spectrum of both expertise and feelings amongst artists is pretty wide. Do any of these resonate with you?
‘I know I should do it, but I really don’t want to! I hate working on a computer, I don’t have a smartphone
and I really don’t know where to start’.
If this is you, you probably need some 1:1 support to talk it through, consider your options and get some support with the basics. Give me a call and we can discuss what would be more useful for you.
‘I know I have to do it, but I don’t really know how to do it well’
‘I spend far too much time disappearing down a social media rabbit hole and never know if it’s worthwhile’
‘I get lots of likes and followers, but it never seems to lead anywhere’
‘I don’t want to come across too pushy, but I do want to make it easy for people to find and buy my work.’
‘I do it for a while, but then I get fed up, or run out of time and forget about social media posting’
‘I know I should be posting on more platforms, adding video etc. but it’s all a bit much!’
‘I think I’m doing OK, but I would like to do better and get some new ideas’
One session can’t possibly answer everyone’s needs, but I’m sure this session will help you think through how you can improve your use of social media. If this session fixed just one thing for you, what would you want that to be? Share this in advance with me, and we’ll make sure that Emerson addresses as many as possible during his talk.
Living from Art supports a wonderfully varied group of artists and there are many who already use social media effectively and confidently to build an engaged audience of people who like their work and buy it from them. This has helped many of them to continue to engage with people and sell work regularly through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram during lockdown. Looking critically at the social media accounts of artists you admire can help you see what you like and don’t like. I don’t want to embarrass or single out anyone, but I would recommend looking at the accounts of Wendy Thompson, Tamsin Stuart and Anita Saunders. for starters. They are all Living from Art members who put time into their social media and gain sales through it. You will find links to all the social accounts on their artists' pages or their websites.
As always, please contact me on 07747032912 if you need more information about our social media session on Thursday 20th August – or would like a 1: 1 discussion about your work. Please don’t leave buying a ticket to the last minute to make sure you receive the Zoom link in plenty of time.
